What we do

Encourage pupils to think and intervene creatively to improve quality of life.

Call for pupils to become autonomous and creative problem solvers as individuals and members of a team.

Require them to look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products and systems.

Combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices.

Encourage pupils to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and effects.

How we do it

This strong and rapidly evolving Faculty area offers pupils the opportunity to study 3 styles of DT in Key Stage 3. Pupils spend one term in Graphics, Textiles, and Resistant Materials each year.

At keystage 4, pupil choice is paramount. As such, courses offered recently include GCSE Resistant Materials, Graphics, and Textiles, BTEC iMedia. And BTEC Fashion Design.

Our facilities are well-funded and maintained and include ultra-modern iMac computing facilities and Laser cutting technology.

Our lessons are fun and purposeful with a strong focus on individual learning.

Textiles

Textiles is a popular subject within Design Technology. Classes are taught both at KS3 and KS4 as an option subject.

Lessons are taught in a fantastically equipped Textiles room, with hundreds of past projects and excellent examples of student work adorning the walls and display spaces.

Fully serviced sewing machines, screen printing stations, and batik equipment are just a few of the creative tools avaliable to students in this area of Design Technology.

 Resistant Materials

Course Description:

 Graphics

You will build on the skills you have learnt in years 7 to 9 to produce high quality products.

You will learn new skills and use up-to date technology that will make your work stand out
from the rest.

What will I study?

Learn a range of design packages including CAD/CAM to produce high quality products
Digital photography and manipulation
Learn a range of drawing techniques
 
How will the course be assessed?

What skills will I develop?

Develop your skills in computer software such as Photoshop, 2D design, Pro-Desktop and Flash.

Enjoy learning how to edit and manipulate images and photographs. 

Have fun using the laser cutter to make high quality products.

Design and make packaging that looks good enough to be seen on the shelves in a shop!

How will I know if this course will suit me?

Do you enjoy working with colour, text and images?  

Would you like to design an advert to feature in a fashion magazine?

Could you design an interesting logo for a new clothing range?

Are you creative and like to solve problems?  
 
What can I do at the end of the course?

Study an A’ level in Graphics or Product design.  There are so many different jobs in the exciting world of design graphic. See Mr. Holmes for more information.

What visits and Work Related Learning Opportunities will there be?

 Take a camera to the O2 arena and then design a new poster to advertise it.

Visit a theme park and design new logos for the rides!

Visit Kent and design advertisements for the tourist board.

Plus visits to the Design museum and other interesting exhibitions.
